20,000 spectators. 250 teams. 25 rinks. 1 bond - the pond. The annual U.S. Pond Hockey Championships (USPHC) is a tournament that celebrates the purity of hockey and brings nationwide attention to a tradition Minnesota helped establish. Haberman created the USPHC and for five years oversaw every slapshot, managing and marketing the mammoth event. (A few storytellers even compete for the coveted Golden Shovel.)
Results:
ESPN has twice recognized this event for its broad appeal, listing it with Wimbledon and Sturgis on its 2009 Calendar of Must-Sees and previously as among "101 things sports fans must experience before they die."
Sports Illustrated called the event "perfect in every detail."
A portion of proceeds from the Haberman-run USPHC benefit youth hockey charities and area parks.
